Which type of data is best for teaching a new dance?

Inquiry Question

Activity

In your learning group, you are going to make up a few simple dance moves to go with a song of your choice.  You will then have to teach the same dance moves to the rest of your class using different types of data (number, text, images, sounds, animation and video).  You will give each of the other six groups the dance moves with one of the types of data then we will see which group learns the dance the best.  Your group will also get a dance to learn from the other groups.  At the end of the activity you will have to input the information into a graph to show which is the best form of data to teach a new dance and why.

Instructions

STEP ONE

Find your learning group and read the Purpose, Instructions, Examples, Rules and Marking Guide.

STEP TWO

As a group, decide on a song to dance to.  Try and find a song with a good beat.

STEP THREE

Create a simple dance move to match the song with no more than 10 dance moves.

STEP FOUR

Create instructions for your dance moves using the six types of data, use the Examples if you need help.

STEP FIVE

Write in your blog about using different forms of data to communicate the same information.  Which was the hardest/easiest? Why?  Which form of data do you think will be easiest to follow in the next stage?

STEP SIX

Your group should receive six dances (one for each type of data).  Each group will have 10 minutes to learn a dance (your teacher will tell you which order to learn them in).  After all the groups have learnt the dance they will perform them and the teacher will judge which group (or form of data) learnt it the best and the worst.  You will need to record this information for your graph.

STEP SEVEN

Once you have performed all your dances and collected all the results you must show the results on three different types of graphs then blog which graph shows the results the best and why.

STEP EIGHT

Blog about your results and the difficulties you had learning the dances.  Were you surprised by the results? Was your previous prediction correct? Which type of data was easiest to follow? Why?  Which was the hardest? Why?  What type of information would be good to use with the data that was the hardest?  Also answer the inquiry question 'What type of data is best for teaching a new dance?'  Make sure you state your reasons why.
